SPORTS INJURY PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

SPORTS INJURIES

Sports Injuries occur due to accidents while playing a sport or due to mistakes during training. Sports injuries can occur due to lack of warmup, improper technique, over training or weak muscles. The most common type of sports injuries are :

Muscle Pull - The muscles in the hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, lowback, shoulder or groin can get torn due to overwork or overstretching. The person would feel stiffness, pain, swelling and inability to use the muscle.

Ligament Injury - The Ligaments in the knee joint - ACL, PCL, Meniscal or the ligaments in the Shoulder Joint - Rotator Cuff can get torn due to severe crash in any kind of sporting activity specially contact sports. These types of injuries will weaken the joint and give immense pain in movement.

Shin Splints - People with flat feet are likely to suffer injury around the shin which is due to the inflammation of the tendons around the tibia.

Stress Fracture - Breaking of the bone due to overwork and inability of the muscles to take the load also occurs in sportspersons.

Tennis Elbow - The most famous Indian sportsperson to have suffered this debilitating condition was Sachin Tendulkar. Inflammation caused by tears in the tendons around the elbow cause this painful condition.

Low Back Pain, Sprained Ankle, Planter Fascitis, Hip Bursitis, Achilles Tendon are some of the other sports injuries for which treatment is available at our Sports Injury Centre.

TREATMENT

The first line of treatment for a muscle pull is RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This would heal some of the muscle injuries which are not very severe. In any case after the injury you must consult to doctor to get the extent of injury evaluated and get proper advise. Partial tear in the knee ligaments would heal by giving rest to the knee joint and stopping sporting activity. However surgery is the only option for complete tear in the ACL, PCL or Meniscal Liagments. Rotator Cuff injuries can be treated by physiotherapy or Arthroscopic Surgery.

Shin Splints are treated by RICE and also by non steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines. Wearing proper sports shoes will prevent shin splints. Majority of the stress fractures occur in the lower part of the body due to greater weight burden. Women are more prone to stress fractures. Rest is mostly prescribed to treat stress fractures.

Treatment of Tennis elbow is mostly done through physiotherapy. In some cases steroid injections can help in reducting inflammation. Surgery is the last option when all other treatments have failed to deliver the desired result.

Sudden jerk to the spine either during lifting heavy objects can result in Disc protruding and impinging on the nerve root causing severe low back pain. If physiotherapy fails to relieve pain then endoscopic decompression surgery is done to treat the condition.

PREVENTION

Physical activity is an important part of maintaining overall health. However, certain precautions should be taken to minimize the risk of sports injuries. Using the correct equipment and maintaining equipment can help prevent sports injuries.

Wearing the recommended protective gear can help shield the body against injury. Resting between workouts gives the body time to rest and repair. Starting activity slowly and gradually increasing strength, flexibility, and endurance gives muscles, bones, and other tissues the opportunity to adapt to more difficult workouts, minimizing the risk of injury.

Finally, listening to the body and backing off at the first signs of pain, discomfort, stress, or overheating will help reduce the risk of sports injuries.

In case of injury you must immediately consult a sports injury specialist so that treatment can be started at the earliest. The specialist would do a thorough physical examination followed by diagnostic tests if required. The first line of treatment for most of the sports injuries is physical therapy and the cost is quite low in India. Each session costs Rs. 400 - 600 and you may require 5-7 sessions depending upon the extent of the injury.
