Superior, as the name suggests is the upper part of the shoulder capsule. It supports the humerus head remaining centred in the shoulder socket. This helps when you raise your arm. In patients who have suffered severe damage to the rotator cuff which cannot be repaired, reconstruction of the superior capsule helps. The Superior Capsule Reconstruction Surgery was invented by Dr. Tiruhisa Mihata in Japan in the year 2012. It is therefore a very new technique and few arthroscopic surgeons around the world have attempted it. Dr. Praveen Tittal has been doing this surgery for the patients in which the rotator cuff is beyond repair and those who have exhausted the physiotherapy option.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

The Surgery is done Arthroscopically and is a daycare procedure. In this surgery the surgeon will use an Allograft which is an artificial thick skin like patch. Using the arthroscope the surgeon will attach this patch to the humerus head on one side and to the top of the shoulder socket on the other side. Then the surgeon will attach this patch to the rotator cuff tendons at the back and the front. This will restore the stability of the shoulder joint and improve the mobility. More than 85% of the patients have reported an improvement in the strength and mobility of the shoulder joint. More than 95% of the patients have reported significant pain relief.

COST OF TREATMENT

The cost of Superior Capsule Reconstruction is in the range of Rs. 2,50,000 - 3,50,000 depending upon the hospital and the type of graft used. The patient has to first consult Dr. Praveen Tittal after which investigations like MRI Shoulder Joint is done. The cost of these would be in the range of Rs. 10,000 - 12,000. The hospital stay would be just one day but the patient will have to undergo physiotherapy for atleast one month and then do regular muscle strengthening exercises. Best results are achieved within one year of the surgery.
